Winter Guard

Program Summary

Winter Guard is the sport of indoor color guard. Modern color guard is a combination of the use of flags, sabers, mock rifles and other equipment, as well as dance and other interpretive movement. Winter Guard typically begins with clinics and/or auditions in early fall. Groups learn their programs throughout the fall and competitions begin in late January or early February and take place in local circuits. Many guards also travel to some regional competitions. The season culminates at the Winter Guard International Championships in April.

Royal Guard Winter Guard is currently open to anyone ages 18 and over who has a love for the performing arts and wishes to explore color guard as a means of artistic expression. We seek to serve performers who wish to continue their color guard journey after “aging out” of Independent A and Open Class Guards or are unable to adhere to the schedule and/or financial commitments of a nationally competitive A or Open Guard.

We compete in the North Star Circuit locally. You can find information about up coming local competitions by checking the North Star Circuit website:  https://northstarcircuit.org/

OUR HISTORY

In 2020, Royal Guard competed in the Independent A Class both regionally and nationally. The guard competed in North Star Circuit (MN) and also travelled to the Winter Guard International (WGI) Regional in Omaha, Nebraska, placing 1st in Independent A Class. The guard planned to travel to Dayton, Ohio to compete at the WGI Championships in April; however, the season was cut short due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

For the 2021 season, Royal Guard was able to compete in  North Star Circuit’s four live competitions and competed in WGI’s virtual competitions and reached the finals. Early in our season, our state went into a shut down. During this time, we “paused with a purpose” holding virtual meetings with our members to do physical training together, and present on topics such as personal finances and aspects of how to design a winter guard show.

In 2022, we competed locally, regionally and nationally at the WGI World Championships.  Due to a number of factors, we went inactive for the 2024 Winter Guard Season.  Although we will not have an Independent A Guard in 2025, we are excited to be launching a NEW All-Age Guard for members 18 years of age and older.

Keep in touch with us versus our social media pages and the North Star Circuit website and social media. We hope to see you at a show!
